Another Fun Family Tradition

Every year, our church holds a really fun event called Harvest Fair. It is completely free for anyone who wants to come and we have made it a family tradition to go every year. Here is just a glimpse at all the fun! I think you will see why it is such a perfect family fun day tradition!

2/3 Homemade Halloween

Well, tonight is Trick-or-Treat night here in Lancaster. The kids have already been putting their costumes on...and I of course have already been snapping pictures of them.

This year, is a 2/3 Homemade Halloween here in the Lawler house, as you will see in the final picture.

Noah decided early on that he wanted to be a robot and he wanted me to make the costume.

Mayra went back and forth on a couple of costume ideas, but ultimately decided she wanted me to make her a princess costume. Many people asked me, "What princess is she going to be? Jasmine? Cinderella? Belle?" To which I said, "No. No. No. You don't understand. Mayra wants to be the princess. As in Princess Mayra, not Princess Someone Else." As I told you in this post, she is a MAJOR girly girl.

By the way, the girl who loves red, pink and purple decided that she had to be a yellow princess. And so without further ado, I give you....
Princess Mayra.

Johnny wanted me to make him a pirate costume, but he also saw the "Coolest Hulk Costume at Toys R Us." He didn't want Daddy and I too spend a lot of money on costume stuff, so he decided that he would have me make the pirate costume and then maybe the hulk costume would be on sale after Halloween.

Needless to say that his heart in the matter melted my heart. He is 7 years old and he is ALWAYS thinking of others. He thought the Hulk costume was the coolest costume ever and yet he was perfectly content with me making him a pirate costume so that we could save money. How sweet is that?

Thus, the 2/3 Homemade Halloween.

That "Others First Attitude" that Johnny so often exhibits had me practically running to Toys R US to get that Hulk costume.

And so here you have it...a 2/3 Homemade Halloween.

PS If you want to see some more great costumes, head on over to Kelly's Korner.

Our New Favorite Toy

John and I have always loved hot sandwiches. When going out to eat, we would gladly choose a family style restaurant that serves good hot sandwiches over a candlelight, wine, and cheese place. We just love hot sandwiches. In fact, usually when we do go out to a place that serves them, we can't decide on just one, so we choose two and then we split them.

With all that said, meet our new favorite toy....

A panini maker!!!!!

We are having so much fun with it that we have had paninis for dinner almost every single night since we bought it.

We have made...
portabello paninis with balsamic dressing...
chicken, spinach and apple paninis...
steak and onion paninis...
chicken and mushroom paninis...
yum!
yum!
yum!

I have begun to daydream about all the panini possibilities.

So last night, I went online to search for panini recipes...
and came across something that I never imagined in my wildest dreams...

A PANINI BLOG!!!!!!!!
I kid you not.
A panini blog.
Check it out if you'd like @ Panini Happy.

Oh the recipes! What will I ever make first?

A Little More On Johnny's Birthday

A while ago, I posted this post about Johnny's birthday party, which he chose to have at the nursing home that he visits regularly. Well, today we received the magazine that a couple of the nursing homes put out and were so excited to see this..... (please click on the magazine cover for a close up view and note the "In This Issue" at the bottom of the page)

And then, on page 7, we found this (Again, if you click on the picture you will have a close up view and be able to read it more easily)....

We are so proud of you Johnny! Not just proud of the things that you do, but proud of who you are and proud that you are our son. And we love you so much.

We hope and pray that as people receive this magazine and read the article about what Johnny chose to do for his birthday, they will be inspired to give some of their time to someone in need.

Johnny chooses to spend a few hours of most of his Sundays with the people at a nursing home close to our home. Each week when we go there, he is on the look out for individuals who look lonely, sad, or don't seem to get a lot of visitors...then he adds them to his list of people to visit with. Many of the residents have come to know Johnny quite well, and they look forward to his visits. Their faces light up when he walks in the room and he smiles from ear to ear as he visits with them and chats with them.

He has just recently begun to bring his guitar when he visits and has been playing the songs that he learns at guitar lessons. It is so awesome to hear the residents sing along as Johnny plays Jingle Bells and other songs.

The Lord has gifted Johnny with a compassionate heart for others and he finds joy in sharing the love of Christ with others. John and I look forward to seeing how the Lord will continue to use this gift to bring glory and honor to Himself!

Fun Family Day!

A local church near our home had a fair this weekend, so we took the kids out for some family fun...and it turned out to be a REALLY FUN day!

The kids enjoyed pony rides and a moon bounce. They played games and won prizes. They enjoyed cotton candy, hot dogs, pretzels and cider.

We all went on a hay ride together and it was the best hay ride ever. Seriously! We have been on several hay rides (at least) with the kids, but they all failed in comparison to this one. It was the bumpiest, craziest, most fun hay ride we have ever taken. We laughed hysterically the entire time (especially Noah as you'll see in some of the slide pics below). What fun!

At the end of the day, the "grand finale" of the fair was a Christian Illusionist named Brett Myers. That was truly the best part of the day! He was so great and I love that he shared his testimony during his act, and weaved truths about Christ throughout his performance. His illusions were incredible and he left even the adults stumped and wanting more. Johnny had an opportunity to be a volunteer and it was so cute to see him up there on the stage.

We really had a fun family day! Here is just a glimpse of it:

Christian Homeschool Co-op

We joined a homeschool co-op for the first time this year and we are really enjoying it so far. Johnny and Noah are taking a sign language class and "Supermarket Math". Mayra is taking "Loving Literature."

The boys have amazed me learning many new signs each week, learning the sign language alphabet, and learning songs in sign language as well. There teacher even encourages them to study their homeschool spelling words by finger spelling them in sign language! They are having so much fun!

In Supermarket Math, they are learning how to count money and make change, and they are very excited that their homework assignment this week is to take a trip to the grocery store, make a list of some of the items in our cart, and add up the prices.

Mayra hears new stories each week and does a lot of fun art projects relating to each story. Last week, she told me all about animals that lay eggs. This week she had so much to tell me about trains.

We are meeting many wonderful families and having so much fun. A couple of weeks ago we even went on our first field trip with our co-op group. We went to the State Museum of PA. They held a special day just for homeschoolers and the theme was Native Americans of PA. We learned a lot, met a lot of nice people and had a ton of fun.

Here are some pics from our field trip.
